College of Education and Human Development

Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching

The Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching prepares educators and other professionals to work in schools and human development organizations.

Interdisciplinary Studies Major
The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies.  This degree provides students with broad background across various fields of study with the opportunity to explore a selected field of study in greater depth.  The program offers students the opportunity to explore connections across various fields of study and ways of thinking in the different fields of study.

Certification Options
Students who choose the IDS major can also seek teacher certification. The IDS major with certification options is designed to give successful students the opportunity to become teachers who understand their own thinking and learning processes and can successfully foster children’s conceptual, intellectual, and affective growth.  IDS majors who select a teacher certification option can choose from either of two options within the department: the early childhood-grade 4 generalist certification (EC-4) or grades 4-8 generalist certification. Students seeking either of these certifications can also obtain the PK-12 Generic Special Education endorsement.  These programs offer students extensive experiences to work with children in school settings.

The Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching offers coursework required for students seeking secondary certification (grades 8-12).  Students seeking certification to teach at the secondary level must obtain a bachelor’s degree in the academic area in which they plan to teach.
