The Master of Arts degree in Education with a concentration in C&I (Teaching) requires the following:
A GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 semester hours of the B.A. for acceptance into the graduate program. Students applying to the MAECIT program must be accepted to graduate school clear of any and all deficiencies to be considered as a candidate at the time of application.
39 semester credit hours of graduate course work to include 12 semester hours of core courses, 15 semester hours in the C&I concentration, and 12 semester hours in an area of specialization related to the area of certification and successful completion of the comprehensive exams.
Successful completion of field-based experiences during the initial spring semester: this semester requires that candidates be available to spend time in classrooms during the day for a minimum of a 3-hour block of time at least once a week for the duration of the semester.
Successful completion of a supervised year-long teaching internship in one of the school districts in the San Antonio area. Candidates are required to obtain employment on their own, and acquire a probationary teaching certificate through the University that allows them to be the classroom teacher of record for the internship year. However, if, for any reason, a candidate is not employed by a district for the internship year, MAECIT candidates have the option to complete a student teaching semester at the end of the program that also qualifies them for a teaching certificate.
Induction year of teaching in the same school district (2nd year of teaching).
Teacher Certification Requirements
To be considered for a certification program in Texas, a candidate must have completed the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) test or THEA. Candidates must also pass the TExES exams applicable to their certification area. For MAECIT, this must be accomplished by the fall semester of the second year of the program. Probationary certificates are not renewable through UTSA after the second year of MAECIT.
Secondary math and science MAECIT applicants must also meet the minimum course requirements for completed math and science content courses either in the B.A. degree or otherwise as required by the state for math and science teachers. Transcripts will be reviewed by the certification officer to determine the eligibility of MAECIT applicants for teacher certification in these areas. Candidates who are deficient in the necessary course work for these areas will not be eligible for the MAECIT program.
